A School Security Officer (SSO) is an experienced officer who provides for a safe and secure school environment, fosters an optimal learning environment and acts as a deterrent to unsafe or poor behavior by patrolling the campus, monitoring student behavior, enforcing school and District policies, intervening in physical encounters, monitoring security cameras, monitoring visitors, and reporting unsafe or unhealthy conditions.

Border State Security has established a team of School Security Officers.
Each Border State Security SSO has the following certifications/trainings:
- National Association of School Resource Officers Basic Training
- Security Officer License
- Basic Life Support, trained and certified
- Mental Health First Aid, certified
- AVADE® Workplace Violence Prevention, trained and certified
- AVADE® Active Shooter, trained and certified
- Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, trained
- Member of the National Association of School Resource Officers
